Rhodesian Ridgebacks are athletic hounds known for the distinctive ridge of hair along the back and a calm, dignified temperament. They bond strongly with family and are reserved with strangers, benefiting from early socialization and consistent training. Ridgebacks enjoy daily exercise but are not always busy indoors once their needs are met. Because they are independent and strong, reliable recall and leash manners are important. Given the right structure, they make devoted companions and capable guardians.
The breed developed in southern Africa, influenced by dogs used by local peoples and later by European settlers. Ridgebacks were valued for stamina and courage and historically aided in big-game hunting.
